Conned By Politicians

Frank Abagnale - A Notorious Conmen
In the 60's he conned people, passing $2,5 million in bad cheques.
The movie "Catch Me If You Can" was based on his life.

The only exception I have to have an abortion is in that case of the life of the mother.  I struggled with it myself for a long time, but I came to realise that life is that gift from God and I think even when life begins in that horrible situation of rape that it is something God intended to happen.”  -  Richard Mourdock

Political opponents of Richard Mourdock have conveniently interpreted this statement to mean that Mourdock believes that there may be scenarios where God has intended for rape to occur.  This is really just plain silly.  I don’t believe that any reasonable person can honestly believe that this is what Richard Mourdock intended to say or was saying.  If any person does believe this, I think it is because they are being deliberately obtuse.

It seems clear to me that what Richard Mourdock is saying is that all life is a gift from God.  Not that rape is intended by God.  What Mourdock is saying is that God is the author of life and, even when that life arises under such horrendous circumstances as rape, that life remains a gift from God.  This is what I believe, it is what the Church teaches and what many other Christians also believe.

Admittedly, in the circumstance of rape, to see that life as a gift from God is extremely difficult, even almost impossible, to accept.  I cannot imagine that I would easily be able to concede that life to be a gift if it involved my immediate family.  So I will not even begin to presume that I have any idea of how difficult this must surely be for the woman who is carrying within her that child.  I will also not get into this debate here because I think it requires someone more qualified than me to explain the Church’s position and teaching in this regard.  This post may be helpful to those who wish to read more in that regard – “Abortion in Cases of Rape

The point that I want to make about this situation is this.  I really am sick and tired of the unethical behaviour of the politicians and those people that they use to manage their campaigns.  Richard Mourdock clearly did not say, and neither did he intend to say, that God intended the rape.  Those politicians and their campaign managers who are making these claims are showing themselves to be both liars and master manipulators.  They are displaying a complete lack of conscience and an absence of any scruples.

If you ask me it is precisely these types of politicians, these manipulators and liars, who we want to keep firmly out of government.  It is not the Richard Mourdock's of this world, who have the courage to say honestly what they believe, that we should keep out of government.

We must instead be asking ourselves how could we possibly even begin to trust a politician who has displayed the tendency to manipulate a situation like this to suit his or her own cause?  Have we stopped to think that he or she will probably do the exact same thing again if it suits his or her political agenda?  What if next time it is to the detriment of those voters who actually elected him or her?

It really is time for voters throughout the world to start using their common sense when they are choosing whom they should vote for.  Let's stop being conned by politicians with their smooth talk, their lies and their manipulative behaviour. Let's pick those politicians who will remain true to what they told us that they believe and stand for when they asked for our vote.
