Catholic Schools

The editorial, of the recent copy of The Southern Cross, is about Catholic schools in South Africa. The editorial expresses the valuable role that Catholic schools play in society. The editorial acknowledges that the majority, apparently 73%, of those who attend Catholics schools are not Catholic, but defends the need to retain Catholic schools by saying that:

Letter on Abortion From South African Bishop's

Here is a copy of a letter from the South African Catholic Bishops Conference. It was emailed to the members of its mailing list today. If you are not yet a member of the mailing list of the SACBC, go to their website here and sign up as a member.

Secularism

Bishop Daniel R. Jenky, C.S.C

I came across this letter, from the Bishop of Peoria, in Illinois, USA. It is long but its content is of such a nature that it is worthwhile to take the time to read it. The letter contains an explicit warning, from Bishop Jenky, that “it is critically necessary to raise an alarm among the faithful regarding growing threats to our religious freedom due to the increasing steps toward radical secularization”.

The Cross Exemplifies Every Virtue

Today is the Feast of a truly great man, Saint Thomas Aquinas. Naturally, Matins for today has, as its second reading, one of his sermons. It is titled: “The Cross exemplifies every virtue”.

Refute Falsehood

The Benedíctus antiphon, during Lauds for this morning, the memorial of Saints Timothy and Titus, reads:

Proclaim the message and, welcome or unwelcome, insist on it. Refute falsehood, correct error, call to obedience – but always with patience and the intention of teaching.

Pope Calls A "Staff" Meeting

It must be an absolute nightmare trying to manage communication from the Vatican. We have all on occasion, I am sure, had cause to wonder what the Vatican was thinking with some of its communication. Just today I read that the Pope had been drawn into some controversy, regarding the Romeo Castellucci show, because of a letter that was presented as an official response from the Holy See.

Reason To Be Catholic #563

Here are some thoughts, from another Blogger, that we would be wise to always keep in mind and consider. It is what makes our Catholic Faith so magnificent. It reminds us that, no matter what other denominations may accuse us of, we are truly focussed on our Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ. He is the centre of our faith. Our faith is not reliant on personalities and items of a temporal nature.

Marriage: Union of One Man and One Woman

Is it just me or do other Catholics also get as excited as I do, when I read and see our bishops standing up and defending our faith. It re-energises me and makes me want to do the same. It encourages me to stand up proudly and shout from the rooftop: “I love Jesus and I am Catholic and I am proud of it!” Here is an example of one such recent event that got me this excited.

Start Defending The Church

Do Catholics understand the extent to which the Church is under attack? This is not some imagined phenomenon, which a handful of fanatical Catholics are blowing out of proportion. No, the attack on the Church is real and is steadily increasing.

Westridge Student Centre

Any parent, who has a child heading off to University, especially if they need to reside away from home, is obviously concerned with the welfare of their child. There are a number of horrific stories of what these young adults could be exposed to, even in a University Residence. Add to this the fact that so many students, particularly first and second year students, discover, only too late, how the freedom of residing away from home and parents, often leads to them, at the very least, failing their subjects and as a result dropping out of University completely.

An Own Goal

Why would a Catholic newspaper, whose editorial was used, not as a means to defend, but instead as the basis for critical media reports about Catholic Church teaching, choose to boast about this fact? I would think this would be news that one would happily see fade away with time and buried, never to be remembered, especially not as one of the significant events in the newspapers history.

Goodbye Milo

Last week one of my kittens, Milo, disappeared from home. We had two little kittens – Milo and Charlie – sisters, who were extremely special to me. They were strictly inside cats. If I didn’t see them around me for 30 minutes or more, I would have everyone in the house out searching for them.

Church Alone Decides Who Are Ministers

I have been waiting with great interest to hear the outcome of this case of Hosanna-Tabor v. EEOC in the USA. “Cheryl Perich, a teacher, argued that the Hosanna-Tabor Evangelical Lutheran Church and School of Redford, Mich., had discriminated against her under the Americans With Disabilities Act.” Had she won there may have been a real possibility that it could have created an argument for the state to dictate to the Catholic Church that it should ordain women as priests.

Digest Of Indulgences

This is a digest[1] of the works and prayers listed in the Enchiridion of Indulgences. The Enchiridion recites each indulgenced prayer in full. Because most are recognisable, they will only be listed by name. The un-translated Enchiridion lists each work and prayer in alphabetical order by the Latin names. The order shall remain the same in this listing.

Where Did Fr John Corapi Go?

Does anyone have any news of what has happened to Fr. John Corapi. I checked his website - http://theblacksheepdog.wordpress.com/ - today and found that it no longer exists.

Kill The Old, Sickly, Costly and Unwanted

It started with legalising a women’s right to kill her baby in 1973. Since that decision, until 2008, 50 million abortions[1] have been performed, just in the United States of America. That means that, just in the United States of America, 3 innocent little babies were murdered, during every single minute, of every single day, of every single year, for a total period of 36 years. Who would have imagined the huge number?

Homosexual Priests Most Likely Cause Of Sexual Abuse

There has never been any doubt in my mind that that the biggest cause of sexual abuse of minors, by Catholic priests, was their homosexual tendencies. I don’t believe that one needs to be a rocket scientist to work this out. I also doubt that many would argue this point, except perhaps those who are pro-homosexual or those who suffer from a misguided belief that homosexual sexual activity is morally acceptable.

Rash Misinterpretation Of Vatican II

I felt that it is definitely worthwhile to share with you this letter, which was written by Malcolm Cardinal Ranjith, former secretary of the CDW, to participants in the 20th General Assembly of the FIUV (Foederatio Internationalis Una Voce) held in Rome.

Why Confess To A Priest

Here is an excellent video clip that offers an explanation of why we must confess our sins to a priest. As we start the new year it may be worthwhile for us to consider more frequent confession.

Te Deum

Te Deum, also sometimes called the Ambrosian Hymn because if its association with St. Ambrose, is a traditional hymn of joy and thanksgiving.
