New Prefect Of The CDF

Bishop Gerhard Ludwig Müller

Pope Benedict XVI has today appointed Bishop Gerhard Ludwig Müller as the new Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith.  Bishop Müller was the bishop of Regensburg and has now been elevated to Archbishop.

Bishop Müller, who is 64 years old, replaces the previous Prefect of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, Cardinal William Levada, whose resignation was accepted by the Pope.  It is a requirement of canon 401, of the Code of Canon Law, that bishops and cardinals must submit their resignation to the Pope at 75 years of age.  Cardinal Levada turned 76 on the 15th of June 2012.

By virtue of his office, Bishop Müller will also be the president of the Pontifical Commission “Ecclesia Dei”, the Pontifical Biblical Commission, and the International Theological Commission.

Let us remember him in our prayers as he takes up this extremely important position in the Church.

  1. There are many, on various other blogs, who have expressed concern about the appointment. Some claim that he is too liberal. Somehow I don't believe that the Pope would appoint anyone who differs greatly from him. I don't think that we need be concerned.
