Sex Abuse Lawsuit Against Pope Withdrawn

Attorney Jeffrey Anderson, who has made multiple efforts
to lodge a sex-abuse lawsuit against the Vatican

I am sure all of us remember the 22nd of April 2010, when an attorney, Jeffrey Anderson, filed a lawsuit in Wisconsin, wherein he named Pope Benedict XVI, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone and Cardinal Angelo Sodano as the co-defendants in the sex abuse case. The plaintiff’s attorneys announced, when filing their lawsuit, that they had evidence to show that there had been a worldwide conspiracy, related to sexual abuse, which had been directed by the Holy See.

This event caused an unbelievable media storm and, as a Catholic, I was appalled at the possibility that the Holy See could have been involved in this way. My gut told me at the time that this simply was not true. That this was simply a publicity stunt by people determined to cast the Church in a negative light.

Well, after all that hype, the attorney’s for the plaintiff, on Friday, 10 February 2012, filed a motion whereby they voluntarily withdrew this lawsuit. That’s it. After all the harm that this malicious lawsuit has caused, it is stopped, without any of the same sensational news headlines that it received when it was filed. Where now is this evidence, that the attorney’s for the plaintiff claim they had, to implicate the Pope?

I have to ask. How many of the attorney’s, for all the abuse victims around the world, are truly interested in the well being of their clients and in seeing justice done? How many are really only selfishly interested in the fame, and the potential fortune, that these high profile cases can generate for themselves and for their law practices?

The media is also not blameless in this! Where are the glaring headlines and fanfare to announce that this matter has been closed? No, they are too interested in reporting on the new set of allegations, regarding the corruption in the Vatican, to give this news any space.
